In our efforts to support as many people in need as possible we joined the RURAAC project. Within it we worked with a group of about 25 adults with disabilities who attend the day center of Maria’s World Foundation. Our goal was to develop Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC) materials that will help the group and others with intellectual disabilities get to know one of Bulgaria’s natural heritages - nature park ‘’Aramliec’’. The guidance of what materials to develop and how we received from our partners in the RURAAC project. Other organizations can follow the same steps that are all available in the Booklet ‘’Training Modules for Educators on Alternative Augmentative Communication for Natural Heritage’’. After two days of training and co-designing the materials with the wonderful group at Maria’s World Foundation we produced several communication aids.
They include first a board with all steps that are taken during a visit to the nature park ‘’Aramliec’’. Second, together we selected the most interesting animals that inhabit the park and put together information board for each of them. They preferred to have a picture of the animals with text giving details about the animal. Finally, from all facts about the nature park ‘’Aramliec’’ the group of people with disabilities selected the most relevant for them.
Take a look at the materials below.
The materials proved to be very helpful for the third day of our activities when 24 people with intellectual disabilities visited the nature park ‘’Aramliec’’ and were guided by the above materials. During the day they explored the park, had a picnic, played games surrounded by the beautiful nature, and enjoyed the adventure together. Of course, at the end of the trail the group met our therapy horses. It was a great opportunity for our team to collaborate with educators of adults with intellectual disabilities and expand our field of expertise in organizing outdoor activities especially for that target group.
Using AAC materials requires some knowledge on the subject but has proven to be very helpful in deepening the connection with people with intellectual disabilities. Find out more about the RURAAC project here.
